The re-ordering satisfied three aims: to provide a permanent central cathedra at the east end of the sanctuary behind the forward altar and the clergy benches.

More clergy seating provided by extending the benches in a collegiate, apse layout (and therefore a larger sanctuary) and finally an appropriate terminus for the eastern end of the sanctuary and the space towards the east wall of the cathedral with a new high gradine on which six large candles and a crucifix sit.

The height and length of the whole assembly will have something of the character of a reredos, but will still allow the east wall and the great east window to be seen without obstruction. Above it, we re-hung the tester.

The Cathedra is sited at the apex of the apsidal seating with deacons’ seats on each side. The cathedra is two steps up from the general surrounding floor level and the side seats, one step. Unlike the clergy benches the cathedra and side seats are stone matching the ambo and altar.

The Gradine is made out of Frosterley Marble and Hopton Wood stone.
